How to notarize a document in Edmonton, Alberta.

At some point in everyone’s life, needing to notarize a document will happen. Whether it’s a Power of Attorney, Affidavit, Last Will and Testament, or just a certified true copy of a photo ID, notarizing a document in areas such as Edmonton is easy and simple, as long as you know who or where you can go for a notarization.

There are two types of individuals that have the power to either notarize or witness a signature for your document: a Notary Public and a Commissioner of Oath.

What is a Notary Public?

A notary public in Edmonton is a public official appointed by the provincial government to ensure the authenticity of signatures and help, in part, to deter fraud. Notary Publics witness the signing of important documents and verify the identity of the signer(s). They also confirm an individual’s willingness to sign the documents, and their awareness of the contents of the document or transaction. The primary role of a Notary Public in Edmonton is to:

  • Administer oaths or take affidavits, affirmations or declarations
  • Attest the oaths, affidavits, affirmations or declarations
  • Certify and attest a true copy of a document
  • Witness or certify and attest the execution of a document

All practicing lawyers in Alberta are also Notary Publics. Students at law, judges, judges Lawyers, members of the Alberta legislature, members of Parliament from Alberta, and Canadian senators who were a resident of Alberta at the time of their Senate appointment are also Notary Publics.

What is a Commissioner of Oath?

In Alberta, a Commissioner of Oath is not the same as a Notary Public, and cannot act in a similar position as a Notary. Commissioner of Oaths are generally employed in law and real estate firms, municipalities, and can do the following acts:

  • Administer oaths
  • Take and receive affidavits, affirmations or declarations
  • Attest the oaths, affidavits, affirmations or declarations
