Key Takeaways

  • The CRPO statutory declaration is a commissioned document that must be included in an application to the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
  • An applicant uses the CRPO statutory declaration to confirm that all details and materials in their registration application are truthful and accurate.
  • Anyone practising psychotherapy in Ontario who isn’t registered with another regulatory college must register with the CRPO.
  • Individuals seeking registration with the CRPO  must have a master’s-level credential focused specifically on psychotherapy.
  • A CRPO Statutory Declaration must be signed in front of and commissioned by an authorized official like a notary public or commissioner of oaths.

Who needs to register with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario?

If the work that you do falls within the scope of the practice of psychotherapy and you are not already registered with another Ontario regulatory college whose registrants can practise psychotherapy (those that regulate psychologists, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists and physicians), the CRPO highly suggests registering with them. As well, if you are using the title “Registered Psychotherapist”, you must be registered with CRPO.

Not sure? Use the CRPO’s Self Assessment tool to see if you should register.

What are the education requirements to register with the CRPO?

The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario requires applicants to hold a master’s-level program at the core of the practice of psychotherapy to be eligible for registration. This credential can be a master’s degree or an equivalent graduate diploma that requires you to have completed a bachelor’s-level program for you to be admitted. The graduate level program must also provide training in the Entry-to-Practice Competencies.

When you apply for registration with CRPO, you will need to indicate whether you have completed a recognized training program/accepted bridging program or a non-recognized program.

More information can be found on the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario’s website under “Recognized Accepted Programs”.
