What is a notarized RIN authorization letter?
To register a vehicle for use by a corporation or business in Ontario, and get a permit and licence plate, you need to request a Registrant Identification Number (RIN) for the corporation or business, in lieu of a driver’s license.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (through Service Ontario) currently requires a notarized authorization request letter in order to register a vehicle in the name of a corporation.
What details must be included in the RIN letter?
The authorization letter must be original, from the director(s) of the company, and must include:
- Full name of registrant(s)
- Company RIN
- Company address
- Company telephone number
- Full name of third party
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Vehicle make, model, year and descriptor (e.g. colour)
- Original signature(s) of ALL parties
- Statement notarized by a Notary Public form a Director of the Company that authorizes data change(s) to the RIN
- For companies:
- authority/title of individual granting authority (e.g. Director’s name, signature, and statement, “I have the authority to bind the corporation”)
- a Business Number (if available) and,
- letterhead must be used.
- The letter must be witnessed by a Notary Public and include:
- Date document was witnessed
- Expiry date (if applicable)
