Completing a vehicle ownership transfer is simple, but you’ll need to prepare a few documents before you visit Service Ontario, including:
- A Sworn Statement for a Family Gift of a Used Vehicle, commissioned by a notary
- A Vehicle Ownership Permit (with the completed portion on the back)
- Proof of Ontario vehicle insurance
- Your Ontario driver’s license
- A completed plate transfer declaration if you are also transferring the license plate
- A Safety Standards Certificate, unless the transfer qualifies for an exemption

If you acquired a vehicle from your spouse or ex-spouse as part of a settlement under the Family Law Act, it may be exempt from retail sales tax. You need to show a supporting document proving that the vehicle was part of the settlement. You’ll need to register at Service Ontario and bring one of the documents below:
