How Does OSAP Determine Sole Support Parent Status?

In Ontario, you must be separated, divorced, widowed, or single to be considered a sole support parent. You also need to have a dependent child (or children) living with you for at least 50% of a study period. Dependent children can be your natural, adoptive, or foster children. Each child must typically be under 18.

If a child is 18 or older, they must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Be enrolled in high school with a minimum course load of 60%
  • Be enrolled in a full-time college or university program and out of high school for under six years
    • If they’re attending school abroad, you must be the parent the child lived with last
  • Have a disability and be wholly dependent on you

When Do You Need an OSAP Affidavit of Sole Support Parent?

You may need to OSAP Affidavit of Sole Support Parent if you cannot provide the documents listed above. This can happen if you:

  • Are separated informally without a written Separation Agreement
  • Share custody without a formal court order
  • Recently separated or divorced, and documentation isn’t yet finalized
  • Never went to court to establish custody or child support
  • Were asked to provide sworn confirmation during OSAP verification

You don’t need to have sole custody of your child to be considered a sole support parent for OSAP purposes.

Note: If you receive child support from your ex-partner, you can still qualify for sole support parent status.

What is an OSAP Affidavit?

An OSAP Affidavit helps you complete your OSAP application and secure financial assistance for your studies. You might need one if you lack the documentation OSAP requires to prove a certain status in your OSAP application.

This Affidavit contains a written statement of facts provided by the OSAP applicant, the person making the Affidavit. You must swear or affirm that the contents of your Affidavit are true and sign it before an authorized official, like a notary public or commissioner of oaths.

Providing false information to OSAP may result in penalties under provincial student-aid rules. These can include reassessment, repayment, interest, or restriction from future funding.

Signing an OSAP Affidavit with a Notary Public

In Canada, Affidavits (including your OSAP Affidavit) must be commissioned to be considered valid. This is a necessary step, and without it, your Affidavit isn’t valid.

You can meet with a notary online to have your Affidavit commissioned in 7 minutes, from anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection.

Commissioning an OSAP Affidavit: Step by Step

You can commission your Affidavit online over a secure video appointment. During your online notary appointment, the following will take place:

  • You’ll present a piece of valid, government-issued ID to verify your identity.
  • You’ll swear or affirm that the contents of your Affidavit are true.
  • You’ll confirm that you understand the document and are signing voluntarily.
  • You’ll sign and date the Affidavit while a notary witnesses in real time.
  • A notary signs and applies their official stamp or seal.

Note: Knowingly providing false information may be considered perjury under Canada’s Criminal Code.
